MATISSE was conceived in 1989 by an American team specializing in the development of high throughput servers and a French team specializing in the design of data models for the management of complex object networks. Bringing together this expertise made it possible to market a high performance product in 1992, which won wide acclaim among industrial executives and analysts alike (Gartner Group, IDC, etc.).
Since then, 2,300 users worldwide (in the USA, Europe and Japan) enjoy the high performance and reliability of MATISSE to manage complex applications in the widest range of fields (nuclear, energy, telecommunications, transportation, medical, insurance, etc.).
MATISSE architecture has been designed to ensure independence between:
The unique features of this Client-Server architecture allow for rapid evolution in the standard client environment and the interconnection of specific client environments (e.g. KSR, Cogema, etc.).
A MATISSE server can manage up to 4 billion objects. The size of an object can vary from 1 single character to 4 billion characters (4 gigabytes). Several hundred or even several thousand simultaneous users can connect to the server with high throughput transactional rate. Data distribution through several servers is carried out transparently using "MATISSE Connect."
The server is based on a symmetrical "multi-thread" architecture. Input/Output to and from disks is carried out asynchronously and in parallel with innovative techniques for distributing and fragmenting data (load balancing, dynamic clustering). Data distributing on disks (load balancing) takes into account access times, available volumes and possible fragmenting. Logical data grouping (dynamic clustering) is automatically managed by the server according to previous transactions. An intelligent algorithm understands the object associations most frequently requested by users. Serialization of transactions is guaranteed by version management (versioning), which optimizes the transactional rate (no lock on reading) and gives the reader a consistent view of the database (no dirty reads).
Without mirroring, automatic replication allows operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and provides transparent on-line recovery in case of failure. All versions of MATISSE undergo several months of intensive testing prior to their release.
White room type administration has been designed for continuous operation. Incremental backups are made on-line without interrupting the database. Dynamic clustering eliminates costly tuning operations.
Finally, versioning provides a consistent history of the database states, according to the administrator's needs.
